How To Measure Your Bra Size — Tutorial

FAQs

Cup size describes how much volume a cup can hold. The larger the cup, the greater the volume — so a D cup holds more than a C cup, and so on. It's set by the gap between your bust measurement and your band size:

  • A Cup – 1-inch difference
  • B Cup – 2-inch difference
  • C Cup – 3-inch difference
  • D Cup – 4-inch difference

Keep in mind that cup volume also shifts with the band size. A 34D and a 40D, for instance, aren't equal in volume — the 40D cup is bigger because it's built for a wider ribcage. That's why your band size matters just as much as your cup size for a truly supportive fit.

A proper fit is key to real comfort and support. The band delivers about 90% of the support, so it should hug your ribcage firmly without pinching or riding up. Cups should fully hold your breasts with no spillage or gapping, and the center panel should sit flat against your body. Straps should rest easily on your shoulders without digging in or sliding off.

Every woman should get to know the main bra styles: Shaping Bras, Wire-Free Bras, Convertible Bras, Bralettes, Sports Bras, Side Support Bras, Minimizer Bras, Strapless Bras, Underwire Bras, T-Shirt Bras and Nursing Bras.

You can dig into each type — and figure out which one suits you best — in our dedicated blog.

The most supportive bras deliver just the right mix of lift, comfort and support without giving up on style. A few features worth looking for:

  • Wireless or underwire builds: pick whatever feels best. Underwire adds structured support, while wireless designs have become the favorite for women who'd rather skip the pinching, digging and poking.
  • Wide, adjustable straps: spread the weight evenly so nothing digs in or slips.
  • Full-coverage cups: shape you nicely, stop spillage and keep support secure.
  • A wider underband: locks in all-day support, boosts comfort, and smooths your sides and back for a seamless look.

Choosing a bra that works with your shape can flatter your natural silhouette while keeping you comfortable and supported. Every body is different, and the right bra can balance asymmetry, shape outward curves, lift a fuller shape, or highlight a round bust. Here's a rundown by shape:

Best bra types for your shape
  • Asymmetric
One breast slightly bigger than the other? That's totally normal. Go for bras with removable padding or inserts to balance things out. Molded-cup bras work beautifully for a smooth, even look, and adjustable straps help fine-tune the fit.
  • Wide-Set
If your breasts naturally sit apart, a lightly padded T-shirt bra is ideal. It gently draws the bust toward the center for a balanced, flattering shape, and seamless cups keep the silhouette smooth for daily wear.
  • Bell-Shaped
For a shape that's fuller at the bottom and tapers up top, balconette or demi-cup bras add the lift you want for a rounded look. Underwire styles bring extra support while enhancing your curves.
  • Relaxed
A softer, fuller shape does best with full-coverage bras that offer strong support. Minimizer bras create a lifted silhouette, while wide straps and bands keep you comfortable and steady all day.
  • Round
If your bust is naturally round and full top to bottom, almost any style will flatter you. T-shirt bras, bralettes and seamless wireless bras give lift and support without adding bulk.

Whatever your shape, the right bra changes everything. Find your perfect fit and enjoy the comfort and confidence you deserve!

The wrong bra size or style often leads to discomfort and fit trouble. Here are the most frequent issues and how to solve them:

Common bra fit issues, before and after
  • Spillage: If the cups don't fully hold your breasts, switch to a wider band and fuller cups for better coverage and comfort. Going up a cup size can help too. The Daily Comfort Wireless Shaper Bra and Sweetheart Wireless Contour Bra are excellent for a flattering, full-coverage shape.
  • Quad Boob: If the cups cut into your bust and create a bulge, your cup size is likely too small. Sizing up a cup or picking a full-coverage bra restores a smooth, seamless look. The Comfort Cotton Bralette and V-Neck Bralette are great at preventing this.
  • Uni-Boob: If your bra flattens your breasts into a single shape with no definition, choose a contouring style that adds lift, shape and structure. The Supportive Comfort Wireless Shaping Bra sculpts a defined silhouette with modern foam cups and a wide band, and the Wireless Lift T-Shirt Bra shapes your bust with molded cups.
  • Bands Riding Up: If the band creeps up your back, you may need a smaller band for a snugger fit. It should sit level with the ground and hug your ribcage. Start on the loosest hook when the bra is new to allow for natural stretch over time.
  • Gaping Cups: If the cups gap, try sizing down or choosing bras with adjustable padding. Fuller-coverage styles made for your breast shape eliminate gaps for a smooth silhouette.
  • Straps Digging In or Slipping Off: Adjusting the strap length helps; if they still dig in, opt for wider or padded straps. If they keep slipping, make sure the band is snug enough, since a secure band spreads the weight evenly. Convertible styles like the Shapermint Essentials Smoothing Comfort Wireless Bra and the Supportive Comfort Wireless Shaping Bra offer a customizable fit.

Finding the right bra comes down to comfort, support and a perfect fit — and small tweaks make a big difference!

Most bras last between 6 and 12 months, depending on how often you wear them and how you care for them. Replace yours if the band goes loose, the cups lose their shape, or the straps stop holding an adjustment. Wash in cold water inside a mesh bag and rotate your bras to make them last longer.
